Where to start when self-publishing Your ebook

Where to Start?

by Deek Webb on December 22, 2011

When I first approached the idea of self-publishing my work, I found that the first decision to make is how you will distribute it.  Now you can use Amazon.com’s Kindle Direct Publishing or Barnes and Noble’s PubIT! and upload it yourself.  The downside is that you will only get around  30% commission (for the worthwhile option) or 70% (with no support).

The best option is by far Smashwords.  They will submit your ebook (after formatting it for you of course) to about every place ebooks are sold (rumor has it they just reached an agreement with Amazon to distribute through them as well!) and you get 85% (minus a small fee) without having to signup for each.  In addition they will pay for am ISBN #!  It’s also a great place to meet other indie authors and get people to read your work!

Other online communities you should consider joining are twitter, facebook, youtube, google+ (covered in the social media post).  For writers specifically you should join wattpad, goodreads, googlebooks, scribd, and manicreaders.
